Big V: Eagles surge into grand final
CRAIGIEBURN rode a wave of raucous home support to the Big V men’s division 2 grand final on Saturday night by closing out Melton 2-0 in the semi-final series.
A runaway 74-56 win against the Thoroughbreds was made easy for the Eagles when Melton failed to hit a field goal for the entire third quarter after a competitive opening half.
Craigieburn had established an 11-point lead at the long break and while its own shooting effort of 5-from-20 in the third term was its worst for the night, Melton literally could not buy a bucket.
Eric Miraflores ran with 19 points for Craigieburn while Paul Sianidis finished with 16 points, including three of four from three-point range.
Melton was scrappy in the first half, giving up offensive fouls for pushing off the ball and a four-free-throw technical foul on the stroke of half-time.
Trenth Rhodes’ big three-pointer moments before the Melton foul gave the Eagles their first double-figure lead of the night.
Melton made a fast start to the final term but could close no nearer than 13 points.
A Sianidis three-pointer with 2.45 to go made the margin 18 and had the home fans going wild celebrating the progress to the grand final.
Keysborough is waiting for Craigieburn in the grand final in what will be a best-of-three series. Craigieburn gets only one home game due to finishing lower on the ladder and will get home-court advantage in game one of the grand final series on Saturday.
