Burgle bungle suspect not so well after lift slip
A suspected would-be burglar had to be rescued when he became trapped in a lift well during a bungled break-in at a city shopping centre this morning.
Security guards at Collins234 Boutique Place, formerly known as the Sportsgirl Centre, in Collins Street called police after an alarm was set off about 8am, a Victoria Police spokesman said.
The guards then realised the alleged thief was stuck above an elevator in one of the building’s lift wells.
Metropolitan Fire Brigade firefighters helped rescue the man as lift mechanics were called to move the elevator into a position where he could be pulled to safety.
The Victoria Police spokesman said the man, believed to be aged in his 20s, suffered from an existing health condition that had prevented him from getting out of the shaft on his own.
A spokesman for Ambulance Victoria said the man was not injured and needed no immediate treatment for the existing health condition.
The rescue took about an hour and the man is now being interviewed by police.
