Childcare costs soar
CHILDCARE costs in Hume rose by 15 per cent in the past year, according to a statewide survey by early childhood workers’ union United Voice.
It says fees in the 3064 postcode have gone up by 4.1 per cent in the past quarter alone.
Secretary Jess Walsh said 180 early childhood teachers were being forced out of the sector by low pay and burnout each week.
From a survey of 10 Victorian postcodes, Hume had the second-highest annual rise of 15 per cent in childcare costs, just behind Werribee and Point Cook (16.3 per cent), and above the average of 13.8 per cent.
An average daily fee of $76.30 fell into the medium-level bracket.
