Good spot for a pool

AVID swimmers in Hume will soon be able to enjoy a new addition to the Broadmeadows Leisure Centre – a 50-metre indoor pool.

Hume Council at a meeting last week approved final plans for the centre’s $13.23 million redevelopment.

The works will also include a new creche and outdoor area, additional floor space in the upper-level gymnasium and refurbishments to toilets and change rooms.

Mayor Ros Spence said there was an increased demand for an indoor pool.

“The complex will not only cater for recreational and lap swimming, health and well-being programs, rehabilitation and extra learn-to-swim classes … it will also allow for the staging of competitive swimming events.”

She said the centre recorded more than 400,000 visits during 2011-12 and the redevelopment would ensure more people could access it.

The works are scheduled to finish late next year.
