Hastings League showdown Saturday

Congratulations to the Lake Cathie Raiders and the Lower Macleay Magpies on their achievement in reaching this final game of the season.

The highly-fancied Raiders are well-deserved favourites and will be also be celebrating their 20th reunion. They will have plenty to play for.

On the other hand, the Lower Macleay side have plenty of experience and will definitely show up to play.

And both sides boast some tremendous playing talent.

In particular, I believe the clash in the halves should be a highlight with the Bruen brothers – Zac and Jarid – for the Raiders up against Sam Drew and Joel McCafferty from the Magpies.

In the front row – where the big games can be won and lost – David Bogg and Robert [Smokey] Smith for the Raiders will be in a pitch battle with the Michael Hughes and Byron Prior combination.

But I really expect the respective hookers to determine the outcome of this clash. Both number nines, Matt Johl for the Raiders and Zac McKiernan for the Magpies will have to play at their very best to get their side over the line.

Corey Richardson will be the referee and will no doubt ensure a good, fast flowing game of rugby league.

The first game of the game kicks off at 1pm with the Bun Hayward Cup final to be played between the Kendall Blues who will take on the Port Boardriders, who play in their third consecutive Hayward Cup Final.

On behalf of the Hastings League management committee, I would like to wish all club supporters, officials and players the best of luck on what should be a very enjoyable day of rugby league.

And finally, this year’s reunion will feature the two sides from the 1987 grand final – Port Boardriders and Macquarie Hotel.
