Man hurt in Tullamarine crash after police chase
A MAN has been seriously injured in a crash in Tullamarine this morning involving a car that a short time earlier was being chased by police.
The car and a truck collided at the intersection of Lambeck Drive and Annadale Road, Tullamarine, about 9.25am.
Ambulance Victoria spokesman Paul Bentley said a man was trapped in the car with serious injuries.
A Victoria Police spokesperson said police had been pursuing the vehicle but ended the chase shortly before the car crashed into the truck.
Channel 9 helicopter pilot Ross Barker described the scene as “absolute carnage”.
“It’s a total mess down there,” he told radio 3AW.
Motorist Jeremy said he saw police begin chasing the car, believed to be a small green Mazda, through Bulla after the vehicle pulled out in front of him.
“The car just pulled out in front of me. I slowed down and he didn’t, and he just pulled past and kept going,” Jeremy told 3AW.
“About a couple of hundred metres down the road there was a police officer just chasing him … the guy was driving more erratically than the police officer to be quite honest.”
The driver was airlifted to The Alfred hospital in a critical condition.
Detectives from the major collision investigation unit will investigate the pursuit and crash, with oversight from the Ethical Standards Department.
