Solidarity a key to diabetes response

THE Craigieburn and District Diabetes Support Group will travel to the CBD this week to join in Diabetes Awareness Week.

Group convener John Makaronis says it will be a good way to network with other diabetes support groups and gain new ideas to take back to Craigieburn.

Mr Makaronis launched the group in 2007 when he was diagnosed with diabetes.

He had found little support in the area, but in the intervening years the group has grown from 25 members to 87.

Both types 1 and 2 diabetes have had a large impact on Hume, with figures showing 8317 cases of diabetes last year, up from 4681 in 2006.

Mr Makaronis hopes to get to 100 members this year, saying there are many people in the community who could benefit from the group.

“A lot of people haven’t registered as having diabetes and don’t know what to do,” he said. “And we can help them.”

National Diabetes Awareness Week runs from July 8-14.
