Six members of the team representing Victoria won medals – three gold, one silver and two bronze – at the event in Perth two weeks ago.

Omar Moussa (50kg category) Samil Atlihan (60kg) Ridvan Atlihan (63kg) all won gold.

Coach Bunyamin Kazanci said they were one of only five wrestling clubs in Melbourne.

“There isn’t much of a wrestling culture in Melbourne.

“It helps the kids keep fit and instead of fighting, they do wrestling instead.

“It also helps them listen to people and follow instructions.”

Kazanci said they normally trained three times a week, and up to six times a week before major competitions.

He said that it wasn’t the first time they had won medals at the national championship.

“We normally win five or six medals at the competition, as there are only 120 wrestlers competing nationally.”

Kazanci said the students would compete at the National School Age Championships in October.

He said those results would decide the selection for the Youth Olympics in January.

“If we win any medals at the Youth Olympics, it would be the biggest achievement for the club.”
